The House of Leningrad Trade (DLT)

DLT was constructed as the trade house for Guard Regiment on Bolshaya Konyushennaya, in which they could purchase uniforms, equipment, and tools as well as food and household items with a discount for officers and the Guard Regiment members. DLT had the support and patronage of the royal family because the tsar and princes were traditionally members of the Guard Regiment, and since officers were expected to live a luxurious and lavish life, the store was also expected to be luxurious as well; that’s why Otto Wanger, the architect of the building commissioned to build the department store as fashionable and luxury as the Parisian department stores.

Though DLT was one of the most successful department stores of St. Petersburg, the Bolshevik government had turned it into offices after it entirely looted; not much time needed for the Bolshevik to realize their mistake, and they had attempted to revive the department store in the 1920s, but it was unsuccessful. DLT had turned to a market for luxury goods, such as silver, gold, jewelry, and antiques during that time, and in the 1930s, it acquired its current name as Leningradskiy Dom Torgovli. DLT was gravely damaged during the Second World War and the Siege of Leningrad, but it went under restoration from 1944 to 1947, and continued to operate until 2005. The Mercury Company bought the rights to the building in 2005 and closed it for restoration. The building went under massive reconstruction from 2005 to 2012, which included constructing two extra floors, full interior re-design, and restoration of the exterior look. DLT opened in 2012 again as the flagship store of the TsUM chain store department in St. Petersburg.
