The Derzhavin Museum - St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg is a tourist destination for many travelers who have plans to travel to Russia. The reason for this is a large number of tourist attractions in this city. St. Petersburg is the former political capital and current cultural capital of Russia. Much of today's Russian art and culture is rooted in the last three centuries in St. Petersburg. Many prominent Russian artists have also lived in St. Petersburg. St. Petersburg art and literary museums are also an essential part of the city's Russia tour program. That is why tourists who want to get acquainted with Russian culture and art must visit St. Petersburg during their trip to Russia. One of the most effective ways to get acquainted with the culture and art is to see the art, literary and theatrical museums of that nation. St. Petersburg also offers visitors a wide range of museums and art performances. On a week-long trip to St. Petersburg, you can visit only the literary and art museums and art performances in St. Petersburg, and still miss the opportunity to see many of them. Of course, you should keep in mind that in addition to literary and art tourist attractions, St. Petersburg has a large number of historical tourist attractions and entertainment programs for its tourists that tourists should not ignore during their Russia tour programs. That is why you can include only a limited number of literary and artistic tourist attractions on your St. Petersburg tour program. Since only some of these tourist attractions are included in the travel plans of most travel agencies in Russia, if you are interested in visiting other sights related to the culture and art of St. Petersburg, you should see them alone. One of these attractions, which is usually not included in St. Petersburg's main tour plans, is The Derzhavin Museum.

Gavrila Derzhavin was an 18th-century Russian military, statesman, and poet who rose to power during Catherine the Great's reign. Having grown from a simple soldier to a military commander, then to government offices, and finally to Catherine the Great's personal adviser, he has been highly regarded by other Russian statesmen and the Empress herself. Gavrila Derzhavin had a particular interest in Russian poetry and literature, and on his private estate in St. Petersburg, he held monthly meetings for those interested in Russian literature. Although his poetry falls into the category of classical poetry, most scholars place him among metaphysical poets. Gavrila Derzhavin, one of the most famous Russian poets before Alexander Pushkin and even referred to as Alexander Pushkin's mentor, died on July 20th, 1816, in Novgorod. His body was initially buried in the Khutyn Monastery near Zvanka but was reburied to the Novgorod Kremlin during the Soviet era.

When Gavrila Derzhavin bought a plot of land along the Fontanka River, a small but magnificent mansion belonging to Russian politician Ivan Zakharov was already constructed. Russian architect Nikolay Lvov, a friend of Derzhavin, developed the property and added two magnificent wings and a beautiful arch to create the today stunning looks of the mansion. Of course, this property's later owners made many changes to its magnificent interior, especially during the Soviet era; the estate was changed many times and lost all its splendid form and interior. However, in recent years, this magnificent mansion has returned to its original condition in the 18th century after a long period of major renovations and has regained its glory. Tourists of the tour to Russia can also visit the mansion during their travel to St. Petersburg and witness the estate's glory up close. Of course, the main reason for the reconstruction of this mansion was the establishment of the Gavrila Derzhavin Museum, one of the National Pushkin Museum branches.

The Derzhavin Museum was established in the central block of the Derzhavin mansion on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg. Of course, this museum is not only about Derzhavin's personal and professional life, but also includes writers and poets of his time. Tourists who decide to visit the museum during their travel to Russia can find artworks, such as manuscripts, rare 18th-century books, illustrations, journals, home appliances, ornaments, paintings, late 18th- and early 19th-century prints, and portraits of Derzhavin and his contemporary artists. Of course, one of the main tourist attractions of this museum is the house's renovated interior, which matches when Derzhavin lived in it. Visitors to the museum can visit the Yellow Drawing Room, his study room, and the home theater during their visit to this museum on their tour to St. Petersburg.

The Derzhavin Museum has three permanent exhibitions that may not seem to have much to do with each other. The first exhibition that tourists can visit at The Derzhavin Museum during their travel to Russia is the "Owners of the Russian Lira." The exhibition, located on the first floor of the building's eastern wing, belongs to one of the most dynamic periods in Russian literary history. During this period, journalism was taking shape in Russia, with Russian writers and poets turning to intellectual writing, striving for European achievements in literature, and creating various Russian literature genres. This part of the museum is dedicated to people who contributed a lot to Russian literature during that historical period. The next exhibition is called "In the white gloss of porcelain." The exhibition, located on the western wing of the building, was established in 2009. In this open-funded exhibition, visitors can view porcelains from the National Pushkin Museum's collection, which has not been shown in any other exhibition before and was only available for research purposes. The last permanent exhibition is called "We live in the memory of the Lyceum." The exhibition, located on the second floor of the building, is dedicated to the famous Lyceum and its students' fate. Visitors to this section of the museum can learn about one of Russia's most leading educational institutions during their tour to St. Petersburg. The Imperial Lyceum, which has played a significant role in educating the country's intellectuals and has also trained famous students in various parts of Russia, perhaps one of the most famous one was Alexander Pushkin.
