C-189 Submarine Museum - St. Petersburg

The C-189 submarine was part of 613 class, which were the first and most massive class of submarines that built after the second world war. The C-189 was in service for less than half a century from 1951 to the 1990s and was one of the most excellent submarines of the Soviet navy. After a flourishing time in the Russian Navi, it was parted from the navy in 1990 and transferred Merchant harbor of the port of Kronstadt. In 1998, the C-189 sank due to malfunctioning bottom-outboard attachments, which had resulted in the compartments of the boat to be filled with water. In 2003, a group of navy vets had suggested a plan to the executives to rescue the submarine and turn it to a naval museum with help from the authorities, but the committee had declined their proposal. In 2005, the same group of vets, which had the financial support of the people, have recovered the submarine.

The C-189 went under essential restoration and repair, immediately after lifting from the water; then it moved to its current location on the Neva River. The submarine went under renovation from 2007 for more than two years. Though there were lots of technical challenges, the reconstruction team was able to restore most of the interior and attached the original equipment of the submarine to the C-189. The C-189 Submarine Museum has let people board the submarine since the middle of 2010.

The C-189 is the third floating museum in St. Petersburg after Cruiser Aurora and icebreaker Krasin that you can visit on your travel to Russia. Among the things that you can see in this submarine, we can point out to the living quarters, which include the dining hall, the bathroom, and sleeping rooms; the engine room, which you can find all the equipment that used to navigate the submarine under the water, including the still-working periscope that you can see the surrounding area through it; the place where the torpedoes were loaded and eventually fired is one of the exciting places for people to visit on their trip to Russia. You can touch most of the things inside this floating museum as long as the museum guides, which mostly are vet submariners, are around you.
