The Icebreaker Krassin was built in 1916 by the design of Admiral Stepan O. Makarov in Britain, and it was originally called Svyatogor after one of the Russian fictional fighters, but renamed to Krassin during the Soviet time. The Icebreaker Krassin has provided many services to the Russian Navy throughout its existence, including the time it took part in the rescue mission of Umberto Nobile’s Italian polar expedition in 1928, following the crash of Italia airship in the North Pole; it had also participated in the second world war when it led Allied convoys to bring vital supplies, resources, and arms to the Soviet Union. Many convoys have failed to reach their destination during that time, and most of them severely damaged under the bombardment of the Nazi troops, but the Krassin had fortunately achieved its goal every time. After the second world war, the icebreaker joined research parties in the Arctic Ocean and also helped Russian convoys to reach their destination through the polar region.
While it was expected that the historic icebreaker Krassin has also destroyed like other icebreakers to make way for new and modern icebreakers, the Krassin have been preserved and restored to working conditions thanks to its captain and several naval history lovers. Though the ship is restored to the fully working forms and can operate even today, it has turned to a museum in 1995.
In 1992, the Icebreaker Krassin had included in the list of historical monuments of national importance and secured on Lieutenant Schmidt Embankment. The icebreaker is now a museum ship in St. Petersburg, the only icebreaker naval museum remembering the polar caravans. Since 2005, the ship museum has been operating as one of the branches of the Museum of the World Ocean, which about 40,000 people annually visit it.
The impressive thing about this icebreaker is that, despite its age, it’s still in operational and working conditions.
