Dominico Trezzini was one of the most prominent Italian architects who had come to Russia and created a strong bond with the Russian emperor, to the point that he had chosen Peter the Great as his son’s godfather.

Domenico Trezzini was a Swiss-Italian architect who was born in 1670 in Switzerland. He studied architecture in Rome and worked in Copenhagen before he went to Russia in 1703. When he entered Russia because of his experiences, Peter the Great give him the chief architect title, and he started to work on the pioneer structures in St. Petersburg. Since he and Peter the Great had worked closely together, he got some of the most crucial tasks in St. Petersburg, including designing the most major attractions of St. Petersburg in Russia tour, the Peter and Paul Fortress. He was also the founder of Petrine Baroque architecture style, which named after Peter the Great. Besides the construction, Trezzini had founded the architecture school in St. Petersburg, which trained some of the future top architects of Russia, such as Mikhail Zemtsov, who later became his assistant and heir to his architecture style. Trezzini died in 1734 and buried in St. Simons Cathedral, which because of his prestige and reputation, is sometimes ascribed to him.

Domenico Trezzini had designed some of the significant structures of St. Petersburg during his time, including Peter and Paul Fortress, Alexander Nevsky Monastery, Twelve Colleges, and Winter Palace; however, most of his works have replaced by stone in the future, but his brilliance is still noticeable all over the city, which you can see during your tour to Russia. Although he had contributed a lot to the urban planning of St. Petersburg, including the layout of the Kronshtadt and most of Vasilevsky Island, his most significant work was Peter and Paul Fortress.

St. Peter and Paul Cathedral is the oldest and first-ever built church in St. Petersburg. It was also the tallest building in St. Petersburg before the time that Ostankino Television Tower was built. Though one of the reasons behind the significance of this cathedral is the fact that nearly all of the Russian monarchs have been buried there since Peter the Great, the architecture of the cathedral, which had massively influenced by the Dutch architecture, was entirely new to the Orthodox cathedrals of that time.
