Liteyny Prospect - St. Petersburg

Liteyny Prospect is one of St. Petersburg's main avenues that cross vertically on the most famous street in St. Petersburg, Nevsky Prospect. It acquired its name because of the iron casting workshops on it, which later cast the first canons for the Russian navy. However, after some time, the street's laboring looks were replaced by a luxurious look, which attracts many nobles and high-class residents of St. Petersburg to itself. Liteyny Prospect houses several significant attractions of the St. Petersburg tour, which we at the Star Travel Group would recommend our tourists visit during their free time on the tour to Russia. One of the most beautiful places that tourists can visit on this street is also one of the picturesque spots in St. Petersburg, which houses the Church of St. Panteleimon the Healer.

Church of St. Panteleimon the Healer

Liteyny Prospect - St. Petersburg

One of the most beautiful structures on Liteyny Prospect is the red-and-white Church of St. Panteleimon the Healer, which is also one of the oldest churches in St. Petersburg. Although you need to walk five minutes from Liteyny Prospect into Ulitsa Pestelya to get to the church, because of its architectural design and color, it's easily visible from the Ulitsa Pestelya. This beautiful church was built to mark two major naval victories over the Swedish Empire. Since both of those victories happened on the feast-day of St. Panteleimon, the church has acquired the name of St. Panteleimon the Healer. It was also a confirmation for Peter the Great's dream to develop Russia into one of the significant maritime nations of the world. Although this church was supposed to be demolished in the 1930s, fortunately, those plans never fulfilled, and the Church of St. Panteleimon the Healer remained as one of the excellent examples of Baroque architecture style in St. Petersburg Tour. Though during the Soviet era, almost all of the interior of the church was destroyed, the original mosaic Icon of St. Panteleimon had survived, which was an unusual case that many believed as a miracle. You need to change several directions to get to the church during your tour to St. Petersburg, but the closest metro station to this church is Chernyshevskaya station.

Transfiguration Cathedral

The Ulitsa Pestelya also houses another major cathedral on the opposite end of the Church of St. Panteleimon, which you can visit during your tour to Russia. The Transfiguration Cathedral is one of the regimental churches in St. Petersburg that belonged to the Transfiguration Regiment. The future Empress Elizabeth once came to this area to gain the backing of Transfiguration Regiment's soldiers to the coup against the throne's at the time successor, which they granted it. The cathedral was the way Empress Elizabeth thanked the regiment after she acceded to the throne. Since Transfiguration Cathedral was one of the few churches that were never closed during the Soviet era, it was one of the most visited religious sites. Today, Transfiguration Cathedral is one of the famous churches in St. Petersburg, which also attracts several tourists from the Russia tour. You can read more about this church and other attractions of the tour to Russia on our weblog.

Liteyny Prospect - St. Petersburg

Sheremetev Palace, or as it was once called, The Fountain House due to the lavish design of fountains that decorated its garden once, was one of the largest estates in St. Petersburg that belonged to Field-Marshal Boris Sheremetev. Sheremetev Palace was so massive that it had its hospital and theatre hall. The latter was operated with the Sheremetev's serf theatrical troupe and orchestra, which was famous in St. Petersburg, and many nobles would have visited the palace to see their performances. Counts Petr Borisovich had an artistic soul, which was the main reason behind Sheremetev's fame as one of the significant cultural centers in St. Petersburg. In the palace prime time, especially between the mid 18th century to the middle of the 19th century, Counts Petr Borisovich had hosted several music concerts, literary soirees, theatre performances, and orchestra. Today, the Sheremetev Palace houses two individual museums on its territory; the Museum of Music, which is one of the branches of State Museum of Theatre and Music, and the House-Museum of Anna Akhmatova. Each one of these museums can be the central part of the St. Petersburg tour if the tourists of Russia tour would be interested in Russian culture. You can learn more about both of these museums and the palace on our weblog, as we've gathered all the useful information about them.
